MAUSOLEUM
(Sculpture Stainless steel, tire, cement) 66x116cm
Mausoleum is a work that questions the notion of freedom in contemporary society, revealing the paradoxical promise of the capitalist system. The sculpture features a sword that pierces a tire and reaches a cement base, highlighting the impossibility of truly achieving what one desires in a capital-dominated environment.
In capitalism, we are granted the "freedom to," but denied the "freedom for." We are free to want, but not free to fulfill that desire unless it aligns with the power of capital. This illusion of freedom is a fallacy.
The title Mausoleum refers to the idea of a monumental tomb, a structure that preserves the memory of the dead, but that memory is encapsulated, confined within a defined space. Similarly, freedom in contemporary society functions as an ideal enclosed within the confines of the capitalist system. It is a concept that remains alive and present, but is limited by the invisible walls of economic, social, and political structures. Freedom exists, but only within the terms dictated by the dominant power, much like how a mausoleum contains but does not liberate those it holds.
