DATA IS THE NEW OIL
Carlos Castro, Federico Tansella,
Video (Color/Sound) 14’57’’, 2024
Work exhibited at “L’HABITAT DI DOMANI” Fondazione Bevilacqua, Venezia
“Data is the new Oil” depicts a dystopian future where data is the new currency and every individual is a production factory. The artwork features four mobile phones on the wall, with an incessant scrolling of content alongside images of refineries and factories. Sunlight is condensed into a time-lapse while the data produced and carbon dioxide emitted are monitored. At the end of the virtual day, the accumulated data is displayed: 146 gigabytes and 4 kg of CO2. The piece reflects on the modern obsession with data, suggesting a society veering towards a new digital Taylorism, emphasizing that technology should not be a tool from which to demand answers, but a means through which to ask questions. The sound design was curated by the artists.
